Getting paid

Payment links and online invoicing in Qatar

Updated September 2026

Plenty of businesses in Qatar have no storefront and no cart. They agree a price, do the work, and then spend three weeks asking to be paid. For them the useful product is not a checkout, it is an invoice with a payment button on it.

This covers how payment links and online invoices work, where Qatar’s instant payment rail fits, and what actually shortens the gap between sending an invoice and seeing the money.

Payment links versus invoices

A payment link is a single URL for a fixed amount. You send it by WhatsApp, email or SMS, the customer pays, you get a notification. There is nothing to build and nothing to integrate.

An online invoice is the same payment mechanism wrapped in a document: your business details, line items, tax treatment, a due date and a reference. It is what a corporate customer needs for their own records, and it is what turns “please transfer 4,500” into something an accounts department can process.

Where Fawran fits

Fawran is Qatar Central Bank’s instant payment system, live since 7 March 2024, moving money between Qatari bank accounts around the clock using a mobile number or alias rather than an IBAN, with a name check before the transfer completes. In July 2024 QCB added Request to Pay, which lets a payee request a payment that the payer approves in their banking app.

For invoicing that is the interesting part. Instead of sending bank details and hoping the reference survives, you request the amount and the customer approves it. QCB set a cap of QAR 50,000 per transaction at launch, described as subject to review, so for very large invoices confirm the current limit with your bank.

Fawran carried 25% of payment value in Qatar in December 2025, according to QCB’s statistics, against 49% for point-of-sale cards. For business-to-business invoices specifically, an instant bank rail is often the better fit than a card.

What belongs on a Qatari invoice

  • Your registered business name, exactly as on the commercial registration, and your CR number
  • Your address and contact details
  • The customer’s legal name and, for business customers, their registration details
  • A unique invoice number you can search for later
  • Issue date and due date, stated as a date rather than “30 days”
  • Line items with quantity, unit price and line total
  • The total in Qatari Riyal, with any tax treatment shown explicitly
  • How to pay, including the payment link itself
  • Your payment terms and what happens if the invoice is late

Getting paid faster, without chasing

Late payment is usually a process problem, not a willingness problem. Four changes do most of the work:

  • Put a payment button on the invoice. Every extra step between deciding to pay and paying loses you days.
  • Send the invoice the same day the work is accepted, not at the end of the month
  • Automate the reminder schedule so it is the system chasing, not you. A polite automatic reminder before the due date prevents more late payments than three after it.
  • Make the status visible to both sides: sent, viewed, paid. Most “I never received it” is genuine.

Invoicing with Rapid Gateway

Invoicing is part of the Rapid Gateway merchant portal rather than a separate product you pay extra for. Create an invoice or a payment link, send it, and watch its status; payments land in the same transaction list, settlements and exports as everything else, so your reconciliation is one report rather than two.

The same portal carries WhatsApp commerce, CRM and lead generation, which matters if your invoices are the last step of a conversation that started on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What is a payment link?

A single URL for a fixed amount that you send by WhatsApp, email or SMS. The customer opens it, pays, and you are notified. There is nothing to integrate and no storefront required.

Can I invoice customers in Qatar without a website?

Yes. Online invoices and payment links work without a storefront. You still need a registered Qatari business and a corporate bank account to settle in Qatari Riyal.

What is Fawran Request to Pay?

A feature Qatar Central Bank added to the Fawran instant payment system in July 2024 that lets a payee request a payment which the payer then approves in their banking app, rather than the payee sending bank details and waiting.

Is there a limit on Fawran transfers?

Qatar Central Bank set a cap of QAR 50,000 per transaction at launch and described it as subject to review. For large invoices, confirm the current limit with your bank.

What should a Qatari invoice include?

Your registered business name and CR number, the customer’s details, a unique invoice number, issue and due dates, line items, the total in QAR with any tax treatment shown, and a way to pay.

Does Rapid Gateway include invoicing?

Yes. Invoicing and payment links are part of the merchant portal, and payments appear in the same transaction list, settlements and exports as your other payments.
