Fawran for businesses: instant payments in Qatar
Updated September 2026
Fawran is Qatar Central Bank’s instant payment service. It went live on 7 March 2024 and moves money between bank accounts in Qatar around the clock, for individuals and businesses, using a mobile number or alias instead of an IBAN, with the recipient’s name shown before the transfer is confirmed.
For a business, Fawran is the closest thing Qatar has to being paid in cash without handling cash: the money arrives in your own bank account in seconds, with no card scheme in the middle. This guide explains how to use it and where it beats a card payment.
What Fawran actually is
Fawran is infrastructure, not an app. Your bank exposes it inside its own banking app or corporate platform. A payer chooses Fawran, enters your mobile number or alias, sees your name to confirm they have the right recipient, and the money moves immediately.
Qatar Central Bank set a limit of QAR 50,000 per transaction when Fawran launched and said it would be reviewed; individual banks may apply lower limits depending on the customer. Check the current limit with your own bank rather than assuming.
- Live since 7 March 2024, operated by Qatar Central Bank
- Available 24/7, including weekends and holidays
- For individuals and businesses
- Payee name is verified before the transfer is confirmed
- QAR 50,000 per transaction at launch, subject to QCB review and bank-level limits
How big Fawran already is
Fawran is not a pilot. In December 2025 Qatar Central Bank reported about QAR 5.1 billion moved through Fawran in that single month across 3.187 million transactions, from 3.614 million registered Fawran accounts.
In share terms, Fawran carried 25% of the payment value QCB tracks that month, against 49% for point-of-sale cards and 24% for e-commerce. In under two years it became a quarter of the country’s tracked payment value.
Request to Pay: the feature that matters for invoicing
On 30 July 2024, Qatar Central Bank launched Request to Pay through Fawran. Instead of sending your bank details and hoping the customer types them correctly, you send a payment request. The payer opens it in their banking app, checks the amount and the payee, and approves or rejects it. Approved requests settle instantly.
For anyone invoicing in Qatar this removes the two most common failure points: wrong reference numbers and transfers that never arrive. The request carries its own identity, so reconciliation is cleaner than a plain bank transfer.
Fawran through your bank
Banks package Fawran for business customers in their own products. Doha Bank, for example, launched Fawran for Businesses on its Tadbeer corporate platform in October 2024, supporting payments to beneficiaries by IBAN, commercial registration number, licence number or computer-card number.
What to ask your relationship manager: is Fawran enabled on the corporate account, what is your per-transaction and daily limit, is Request to Pay available, are there per-transfer fees, and can the transactions be exported for reconciliation.
Fawran or cards: when to use which
| Situation | Better option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Online store checkout | Cards | One-click, familiar, works for visitors without your bank details |
| Invoice above a few thousand riyals | Fawran | No percentage fee on a large amount; instant settlement |
| B2B payments between companies | Fawran | Bank to bank, clean audit trail, Request to Pay for approval |
| Recurring subscriptions | Cards | Cards can be charged automatically; Fawran needs the payer to approve |
| International customers | Cards | Fawran is domestic to Qatar |
| Customer has no card | Fawran | Works from any Qatari bank account |
Most Qatari businesses end up using both: cards for the storefront, Fawran for invoices and larger B2B amounts.
What Fawran does not do
- It is domestic. A customer outside Qatar cannot pay you with Fawran.
- It is pull-free by design: the payer approves each transfer, so it does not replace card-on-file subscriptions.
- Refunds are a new transfer back, not a reversal, so your process has to handle that.
- Access is through your bank, so the experience and the limits differ by bank.

Frequently asked questions
What is Fawran in Qatar?
Fawran is Qatar Central Bank’s instant payment service, live since March 2024. It moves money between Qatari bank accounts 24/7 using a mobile number or alias, for individuals and businesses, with the payee name verified before confirmation.
Can a business receive Fawran payments?
Yes. QCB describes Fawran as serving individuals and businesses, and banks sell corporate Fawran products. Access is through your business bank account.
What is the Fawran limit?
Qatar Central Bank set QAR 50,000 per transaction when Fawran launched in 2024 and said the limit would be reviewed. Banks may apply lower limits, so confirm with yours.
What is Request to Pay?
A Fawran feature launched in July 2024 that lets a payee send a payment request which the payer approves in their banking app. It suits invoices, because the request carries the amount and payee details instead of relying on the customer typing them.
Is Fawran free?
Fees are set by each bank within QCB’s framework rather than published centrally. Ask your bank for its business Fawran pricing.
Does Fawran replace a payment gateway?
No. Fawran is excellent for invoices and B2B, but an online store still needs card acceptance for one-click checkout, international customers and recurring billing. Most businesses use both.
